2023 BC Provincial Cups get underway this weekend as BB5 United look to threepeat
** Thanks to Mike ( for the fantastic draw graphics **
One of our favourite times of the year in the BC soccer calendar is here, with four of the five men’s BC Provincial Cups set to get underway this weekend with matches across the lower mainland, Vancouver Island, and even the interior this year.
The men’s A, B, Masters A, and Masters B cups all kick off their first round matches over Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with the men’s Over 45 cup starting it’s matches after the Easter break, and as always, we’ll have you covered with the action every step of the way here on AFTN, with recaps, results, and video highlights from select matches.
The province’s premier amateur trophy, the BC Provincial A Cup, takes centre stage, with the Vancouver Metro Soccer League (VMSL) looking to continue their stranglehold on the competition, having won every final since 2011. Leading the way are VMSL Premier Division and Imperial Cup double winners BB5 United, who are not only looking to win the treble this year, but are also looking to make it an A Cup threepeat in the process.
Amongst those out to stop them are the team they have beaten in the last two Provincial Cup finals, FC Tigers from the Fraser Valley Soccer League (FVSL). The Tigers wrapped up a second straight FVSL Premier Division and Pakenham Cup double of their own on Thursday night, and with the two teams in different halves of the draw, could another BB5 v Tigers final be on the cards at the end of April at Burnaby Lake?
There’s 14 other teams out to stop that happening, with five teams representing each of the VMSL, FVSL, and the VISL (Vancouver Island Soccer League), and for the first time in a number of years the Pacific Coastal Soccer League (PCSL) champions, Okanagan FC, will also be represented.
The draw took place a couple of weeks ago at the BC Sports Hall of Fame. Here’s how it played:
There’s some very tasty Round of 16 matches taking place this weekend, with some even tastier potential matches on the cards in the rounds to follow depending on how results go.
With three matches on Saturday and five on Sunday, played in six cities across the province, here’s what’s on the slate:
BB5 United CCB [VMSL] vs Bays United [VISL]
Sunday April 2nd 12:30 @ Newton Athletic Park, Surrey
SFC Pegasus Royals [FVSL] vs Inter EDC [VMSL]
Saturday April 1st 6:00 @ Newton Athletic Park, Surrey
Lakehill [VISL] vs West Van [VMSL]
Sunday April 2nd 1:30 @ Starlight Stadium, Langford
Vic West [VISL] vs Coquitlam Metro Ford Wolves [VMSL]
Sunday April 2nd 12:30 @ Fred Milne Turf, Sooke
FC Tigers [FVSL] vs Nanaimo United [VISL]
Sunday April 2nd 12:30 @ Hjorth Park Field 1, Surrey
Gorge [VISL] vs Croatia [VMSL]
Saturday April 1st 3:00 @ Hampton Park, Victoria
Okanagan [PCSL] vs Micro Footie [FVSL]
Sunday April 2nd 2.00 @ Kings Park Field, Penticton
Langley United [FVSL] vs Abbotsford United [FVSL]
Saturday April 1st 6.00 @ Willoughby Community Park, Langley
With only one intra-league match up taking place in the first round, it’ll be good to see teams facing off against different opponents after far too many inter-league games in recent years.
We’ll bring you a full round-up of the action next week.
