After headline-making offseason, Tristan Blackmon’s new Whitecaps deal gives him the security he sought in the place he “feels at home”
“Best year for sure, on and off the field”.
Those are the words that Vancouver Whitecaps defender Tristan Blackmon uses to describe last season as we sit and chat about the year that was 2025 and what is hopefully to come in 2026. In-between those two campaigns, the Las Vegas native had quite the headline-making offseason, but before we get to that, let’s rewind a little.
The phrase ‘career year’ is quite an easy one to bandy about in football in general. For the Whitecaps last year, it was hard not to use it in plentiful supply both for the team and for individual players. The ‘Caps set all sorts of club records in their MLS era, made four finals, added two trophies to their cabinet, and ignited a passion for the team in the city. And that success was brought about by a number of players having standout seasons and perhaps none were better than that of Blackmon.
The 29-year-old centre back was named MLS Defender of the Year and to the MLS Best XI, he earned MLS All-Star honours, had his best scoring season with five goals across all competitions, was an absolute leader on the Whitecaps backline, and earned his first two international caps with the US national team, with a place at this year’s World Cup now not just a pipe dream, albeit a tough one to achieve.
All of that earned Blackmon a contract extension and a pay rise with Vancouver and one of the key cogs to the Whitecaps backline inked a new deal that was announced last Wednesday, keeping him with the club through to the end of the 2029-30 season.
For Blackmon, getting that deal done now was important, allowing him to solely focus on matters on the pitch, and getting a lengthy extension was also important to give him security and stability for him and his family for the next few years.
“It was super important,” Blackmon told AFTN. “Obviously last year, we felt it didn’t end the way we wanted it to, but our intent was always to try and figure out how to be here longer. I still had two years left on my deal, the one before that we signed, but there talks between the club and my representatives for a bit, so the intent was to figure out a deal as soon as possible and I’m just happy that it’s finalised now.
“Even when I re-did my first deal here, security means so much to me. Just to know that I’m going to be somewhere and feeling like the club understands that, and they did for sure. They knew that I wanted to be here long term and it just gives me a sense of security, especially since I want to be here, knowing that I’m going to be here long term gives me ease knowing that, so I’m very happy about that.”

Blackmon is now in his fifth season in Vancouver since joining the club from LAFC, via an expansion draft trade from Charlotte, in December 2021. By the time his new deal ends, he’ll have been a Whitecap for nine seasons, and for a man brought up in the heat of Nevada and going to school and playing in California, there’s nowhere else he’d rather be right now.
“[This club and city] means so much,” Blackmon said, his facing lighting up. “Like if you just compare it to me being in LA before this, I’ve already surpassed the amount of time spent there now, the amount of games by far. Me and my small family that I have here, my girlfriend and my dog, we just feel at home. I mean any time we’re away on vacation we look forward so much to coming back and being in our space. It’s definitely become home to us.”
Those words will be music to the ears of Whitecaps supporters, who had to endure a week or so of headlines indicating that Blackmon was heading to Inter Miami to join up with Messi and friends. Miami media reported that it was a done deal, and despite the Whitecaps saying that they were not interested in selling Blackmon, reports quoting sources that knew what he was supposedly thinking meant the story wouldn’t go away, reaching fever pitch when the player posted a picture of palm trees on his Instagram account.
Those palm trees were from a park in Las Vegas near his girlfriend’s parents house. A park where he has spent previous offseasons running and has posted pictures on his account in years past.

As unsettling as all the transfer rumours were to supporters, for the player, it was a whole new issue to deal with, but it doesn’t seem to have fazed him as he has marshalled the Whitecaps defence to four clean sheets to start the new season. There’s a lot to be said for peace of mind.
“As an athlete, especially in today’s age, I haven’t been in a situation like this past offseason in my career so far,” Blackmon acknowledged. “But you kind of see how in other sports people handle themselves, what they say, and you try and find people that you want to look to to model how you are handling things.
“Obviously there were rumours about the Miami stuff and at the end of the day all of that is put to bed, especially now, and it makes me feel so good about it because we’ve come to the agreement with the club and have the security of just being here long-term. That gives me such a good feeling because that’s what I wanted. So yeah, there was a lot of stuff in the media, people saying things about this, that, and the other, but I just feel really good about the position that we’ve come to an agreement with and I’m happy to be here.”
