Champs Hit Top Spot
In a rematch of last season USL Championship game, Vancouver Whitecaps hosted the Puerto Rico Islanders on Sunday evening, coming out 1-0 victors in a less than exciting game.
Just as in the Championship game, the winning goal came from Charles Gbeke, in the same goal and from a basically identical header. Spooky stuff!
It was a reduced Southside that witnessed the win this evening, Mothers Day festivities in Canada taking preference for some bizarrely, but those there enjoyed the hard fought victory in a game which didn’t really live up to it’s billing.
What it did do though was to send Vancouver to the top of the USL standings only six games in.
With the Caps not yet firing on all cylinders and with their injury worries increasing instead of decreasing, with top scorer Marlon James being stretchered off in the first half, it’s shaping up to be another excellent season for Vancouver once they get most of the guys fit and healthy.
I’ll even be brave enough to predict just now that we’ll see another Championship winging it’s way to Vancouver in a few months time.
As Man United have proved time and again over the years, it’s not the teams that win stylishly every so often that win the Championship, it’s the ones that can win dirty and that’s certainly what the Caps are doing just now.
