VISL Round-up: Big scores and upsets the story of Week 3 matches

What an exciting weekend; not sure if anybody could have called all the scores in advance.

After some big scores, some upsets, and two four goal performances, there’s only one undefeated team left in Division 1.

The highlights of the week were:

* Lakehill gets their first win of the new season as they defeat the young VI Wave team.
* Gorge defeats Vic West to take over sole possession of first place and remain the only undefeated team in Division 1.
* Comox comes down Island and shocks defending division champs Cowichan for three huge points.
* The new kids on the block are hanging tough as Westcastle dismantle Bays United thanks to a four goal performance from Joshua Walker.
* Nanaimo comes down to Victoria and thumps Vantreights, with Daragh Fitzgerald scoring four of their eight goals.

What a week. Here’s the full Division 1 scorers and scorers.

So after all those results from last weekend, the Division 1 table looks as follows.

Our VISL Game of the Week was an exciting one from the Masters A Division where Cowichan 49ers visited UVic Alumni and were victorious 2-1.

Both teams have strengthened their line-ups over the summer, so all were excited to see how the game would play out.

UVic started very strongly creating several scoring opportunities. They carried a lot of the play and it seemed that they would strike early and often. Between Cowichan’s strong defensive work, the goalkeeping of Rob McIntyre, and UVic not taking advantage of those opportunities, the score stayed 0-0 going into the second half.

The first half was exciting will Will Moore and Dean Anderson leading the way with their efforts. Darcy Penner and Stu Barker had a couple chances of their own, narrowly missing for Cowichan.

The second half saw the first goal from Cowichan as Stu Barker was composed in the box, finishing top corner with a perfectly placed bender. A brilliant finish to put the visitors up 1-0. Cowichan were starting to create more chances of their own, had it not been for a couple saves by UVic keeper Mike Haufman, they would have had another goal or two.

But it was to be UVic who tied the game up in the 66th minute when Dean Anderson had an open goal to shoot at after a gratuitous rebound fell nicely to him with no Cowichan defenders in sight.

Cowichan kept the pressure on and while both teams were pushing and narrowly missing, it was Todd Vass who scored the go ahead goal (and eventual winner) with five minutes remaining, on a scrambly play in the box that sent the visitors back to half in a hurry to defend for the remaining minutes.

The match was an excellent showcase for the Masters Division – and most likely they will be the two teams that will qualify for next year’s BC Soccer Provincial Cup.

The 1550’s / Heineken Man of the Match was Stu Barker for Cowichan 49ers. Besides scoring the first goal, he had a big part in the start of the second goal and had a solid work rate all game for the Cowichan squad.

We’re already looking forward to the return fixture at Sherman Road Park.
