Canada WNT v USA – The Story In Pictures
The wait continues.
Canada women’s last win against the US came in 2001. That 16 year wait to taste victory over their fiercest rivals was close to coming to an end at BC Place on Thursday night, but despite some fierce pressure from the home side, the US escaped with a 1-1 draw and Canada were left knowing their young squad looks to be quickly closing the gap on their neighbours from down south.
AFTN photographer Tom Ewasiuk was there to capture all the action before, during and after the game. Here’s his “Story In Pictures”, with a full Flickr slideshow at the end. Some great shots of supporters in this week’s collection too, really capturing what the Canadian women’s team mean to their fans.

Very possibly the sign of the night!
Not sure what strikes the most fear into people – the real Christine Sinclair or this terrifying monster head!
Coach John Herdman is ready for action
Oh Canada
You Canadian starting XI
A wonderful Gord Downie tribute tifo
Canada had some great play in the early going but when Alex Morgan collects a Casey Short header on the half hour mark
And she drills the ball off Rebecca Quinn on the way through and into the back of the net
And it’s 1-0 USA
That was it at half time but Canada staged a great fightback in the second half and after Rebecca Quinn crashes one off the bar, Christine Sinclair sends a dipping ball towards goal
And Adriana Leon is on hand to poke the ball home from close range for the equaliser
Cue Canadian joy. Game on!
But despite some concerted late Canadian pressure, that was all she wrote
