Report and Reaction: The Iron Colts claim Leagues Cup victory in Vancouver, leaving Whitecaps to iron out wrinkles

Vancouver Whitecaps are still looking for their first victory after their return from the World Cup break, going down to a 1-0 defeat to Liga MX side Atlante in Leagues Cup action at BC Place on Tuesday evening.

Jhojan Julio’s 40th minute goal proved to be the match winner in another match that saw the ‘Caps create the better chances, eventually starting to break through the mid and low blocks of the Mexican side, but their finish and quality simply was not there. A third straight match now where Vancouver have failed to score from open play.

Just how the Whitecaps would use this tournament was certainly a question going into it. Axel Schuster had told us preseason that the club wanted to take part in the competition so that the players could earn their bonus money they missed out on after skipping it last year due to their heavy schedule.

The competition is a bit of a hard sell for fans, although nearly 20,000 was the announced attendance, if not the actual bums on seats. The point of it is a bone of contention any year, but coming back after a long break, this year’s competition just seems a wasted opportunity for MLS to build on that World Cup momentum.

With Jesper Sorensen making seven changes from the side that started Saturday’s draw with LAFC, you got an indication that this was more about getting minutes for players and taking a look at some in particular, than going out to try and lift silverware. At least at this stage.

The first half was a fairly dull affair, with the first real chance of note fell to the visitors in the 24th minute, with Isaac Boehmer quickly off his line to deny Luis Puente, who was in on goal.

Atlante broke the deadlock five minutes before half time with a nice finish from Julio in off the right post, after the ‘Caps had offered very little up front. It was a goal you could see coming.

The ‘Caps had a couple of chances to end the half, with Rayan Elloumi firing weakly at Oscar Jimenez, when wide open in the box, before Oliver Larraz poked one towards the Atlante keeper in stoppage time.

The Whitecaps made three changes at the half to try and find some spark, with Tristan Blackmon, Tate Johnson, and Emmanuel Sabbi coming into the game.

Sabbi had an immediate impact and was denied twice by Jimenez in the space of a minute.

A last gasp tackle saw Mathias Laborda deflect a Julio chance just wide, after some neat build up play just past the hour mark.

Elloumi was played in on goal for Vancouver in the 66th minute, but the last defender got enough on the ball to send it behind for a corner, with Blackmon headed narrowly over.

Sabbi had another chance to level things up in second half stoppage time, but it rolled agonisingly wide, although the flag had gone up for offside in any case.

It was an impressive win for Atlante, who simply looked more up for the match than Vancouver from the off and got their reward.

A disappointing start to the Whitecaps’ 2026 Leagues Cup campaign, and with the new format seeing just four of the 18 MLS teams advance, it probably signaled the end of their knockout hopes at the same time. Not the worst thing in the world to be brutally honest. The team need to use these next two matches to get some chemistry going with the starters, some valuable minutes for the fringe players, and assess just what depth this team has.

On this showing alone, coupled with recent results, the drop off feels alarming, with several players simply not looking like the players the team needs going down this second half of the season. Hopefully this will allow Axel Schuster to quickly see the needs and fill them, or a promising season has the potential to go off the rails quite quickly.

The glass half full version of that is that players are mostly back from injury and now they can be shaped into the kind of team they were before the break. They haven’t become a bad team overnight, but they do need some help. Let’s hope it’s coming very soon.

On the overall performance:

“The first half, there was not many chances. We tried to see if we could get some openings, we had difficulties with that. We knew that they would play direct and go for the counter, we didn’t give much away. They had a big chance, and then it was a great strike from them on the goal. We overcommitted, but he [Julio] turned and did well. And then in the second half, we pushed a little bit more and the game got more open, of course. We had to chase and created the opportunities we needed, but we also gave some big opportunities away. We had to chase, and with the clock running down, it was a little bit too stressed in some moments. But on the other hand, we also had the opportunities we needed.”

On players getting into the lineup for the first time in a while:

“The thought process was of course that it was great to have Sam [Adekugbe] and Ralphie [Priso] coming back into the starting lineup. We haven’t seen them in a long time in the starting lineup, so it was great having them in. And then, Rayan [Elloumi] also hasn’t got that many opportunities, now he came in. I think that he played a good game overall. It was also about managing the force in the group, and also having some players hungry for getting in and hopefully take the chance that was available today.”
