VISL Jackson Cup Round-up: Snow be gone as goals fly in

The weather cooperated and the Vancouver Island Soccer League were able to get all their scheduled games in this past weekend. The result was a goalfest in the eight Jackson Cup games, with 45 goals between them, some knife edge encounters, and a couple of routs.

Getting the games in was a massive boost for the league, who were already two full weeks behind. An issue the VMSL are now facing over in the lower mainland.

Here are all the results from the matches played in the Rounds of 16 and 32 of this year’s Jackson Cup:

The Friday night Gorge vs Prospect Lake Lakers affair was the early Cup thriller, needing a penalty shootout for Division 1 team Gorge to defeat the Division 2 Lakers.

Another surprising game saw Comox Valley United upset Mid Isle Mariners in a battle of Division 1 teams. Comox were losing 4-1, before battling back to win 5-4 in a thriller.

There were a couple blowouts in favour of Division 1 teams with Nanaimo United and Bays United racking up eight and nine goals respectively in wins over Division 2 sides
Saanich Fusion Bandits and Vic West Vintage Roofing.

There was a good battle at Westhills on Saturday with the Vic West team from Division 1 avoiding an upset as they held on to defeat Division 2 side Victoria Highlanders 3-2.

The weekend did finish off with an upset of sorts as Nanaimo United’s Division 2 team defeated Division 1 side Fernwood Town 4-3 in another barnburner.

There will be more Jackson Cup 1st Round games to complete the weekend upcoming, so those will be scheduling in the next 24 hours.

There was also time to get some league play in as well with a rare late Sunday Night special. And it was a big one as the top two of Westcastle and Cowichan met at Westhills in Division 1 action.

Both teams had open weekends and needed to get their first of two makeup games in, Very little was decided though, with the teams playing out a 1-1 draw. They will face each other once again tonight, in what will more than likely decide the League Championship. (Garrison Cup Champion)

Hopefully the white stuff stays away to allow more catch up matches.
