Vancouver Whitecaps v New York Red Bulls – The Late Lapse Story In Pictures
You certainly don’t want to leave B.C. Place early these days. Unfortunately.
For the second home match in a row Vancouver Whitecaps gave up a goal at the death, throwing away a crucial victory and having to settle for a 2-2 draw.
A ten man New York Red Bulls side were the beneficiaries this time around as Daniel Royer grabbed his second of the match, cancelling out Kendall Waston’s brace that looked to have turned the game around and earner the ‘Caps what would have been three massive, and very much needed, points.
AFTN photographers Tom (@ResidualImage) and Caroline (@FrogPhoto) were there to capture the action before, during and after the game. Here’s their “Story In Pictures”, with a full Flickr slideshow at the end.
Your Whitecaps starting XI
It didn’t take long for the Red Bulls to cause the Whitecaps problems as Bradley Wright-Phillips sent in a defence splitting ball just five minutes in
Jake Nerwinski and Stefan Marinovic got in each others way
Allowing Daniel Royer to easily tuck away the opener
The ‘Caps weren’t really at the races but Yordy Reyna did force Luis Robles to tip a shot over the bar midway through the half in a rare threat
But the ‘Caps got themselves back level three minutes before half time as Yordy Reyna sent in a corner and Kendall Waston rose unchallenged to head home the equaliser
Get in there! For only the ‘Caps captain’s second goal of the season. But he wasn’t done yet
An amazing half time sky in downtown Vancouver
The Red Bulls pushed for another goal at the start of the second half, causing a goalmouth scramble in the Whitecaps box
Which no-one, not even former Whitecap Tim Parker, could poke away
But on the hour mark, Kendall Waston struck again, although Tim Parker claimed he was held down
That didn’t matter to Waston who headed home Felipe’s corner
To give the ‘Caps a 2-1 lead
Happy Cappers
And happy Curva Capos
The 69th minute saw Alphonso Davies streak towards goal before being cynically brought down by Michael Murillo
Leaving Davies writhing in pain but drawing only a yellow for the Red Bull
But that was remedied 15 minutes later when another challenge brought a second yellow and then a red
New York’s ten men were to have the last laugh though as a free kick to the back post saw Daniel Royer lose his marker
To fire home his second of the match
Leaving the former teammates to enjoy another moment together on the BC Place pitch
