Vancouver Whitecaps v New York Red Bulls – The Story In Pictures
When you don’t get one shot on target in a game that your coach described as “the most important game of the season”, that says it all.
Vancouver Whitecaps had their chances. They had their shot, 12 of them. Unfortunately seven of them fell to Erik Hurtado, who it’s safe to say didn’t have the best afternoon at the office, leaving him “distraught” and in tears after the match.
The difference between the two teams was Bradley Wright-Phillips 50th minute strike. In reality, the difference was one team had an actual proven striker. The Whitecaps can only dream about having that.
It was horrible and poor AFTN photographer Tom Ewasiuk was there to capture all the action before, during and after the game and here’s his “Story In Pictures”, with a full Flickr slideshow at the end.

It’s all fun and games and then these guys come out

Can these guys save Whitecaps season? [Spoiler: No]

Cristian Techera races into the box in the 14th minute but can’t get a shot off and falls over

Erik Hurtado has his first of many missed chances over the afternoon

Drama in first half stoppage time as Romanian referee Sorin Stoica sends of Whitecaps coach Carl Robinson for “acting in an irresponsible manner”

Would love to have heard David Ousted’s take on it right here

The second half starts in much the same vein as the first as Hurtado misses another chance to put the Whitecaps ahead

This time it’s punished though as Bradley Wright-Phillips fires home what proves to be the winner in the 50th minute

The faces of the fans sums it up – a mixture of being pissed off and incredulous

Failing with his feet, Hurtado tries a header this time. Same end result.

As Caps push Felipe brings a late save out of David Ousted at the other end

But there’s still time to salvage a point in stoppage time as the ball comes to Hurtado a few yards out

Can he do it this time?

No
