Lakehill finish year with 14 point lead at top as they close in VISL Garrison Cup
Week 14in the Vancouver Island Soccer League (VISL) is complete, and it wrapped up a calendar year like no other.
The final weekend of action in 2021 saw the keepers to the fore, with every game recording a shutout.
Friday started out with a battle at Finlayson Turf as Bays United defeated Vic West 1-0. Scoring the only goal of the game for Bays was Ian Whibley, while earning another shutout was Bays keeper Harjot Nijjar.
Friday also saw Cowichan getting back to their winning ways by shutting out Westcastle 3-0 thanks to a Kwasun Cook-Thomas goal and a double from Michael Daniels. Earning the shutout was Darian Achurch who was called up on a permit from the Masters team out of Cowichan.
The last game on Friday saw Gorge FC defeat Juan de Fuca Allflows 2-0. Dominic Colantonio and Kaelan Cooke were on the scoresheet, while securing the clean sheet was Nick McCue.
The loan game on Saturday saw Lakehill defeat Powell River Villa 4-0. Golden Boot leading Blair Sturrock added another two to his tally, with Jordan Easton and Isaac Koch also on the scoresheet for Lakehill. Adding another clean sheet to his totals was Lakehill keeper Hardeep Gahunia.
So after all of that action, here are the VISL Division 1 standings to wrap up 2021, as we get ready for the final stretch starting mid January.
Lakehill are still very much in control, and now have a magic number of seven points to secure the championship and the Division 1 Garrison Cup.
The Bays and JDF wins have put them right in the middle of the table, with Gorge on their heels.
In the relegation zone are Comox, Powell River, and Westcastle at the very bottom. It’s going to be a battle for them to keep their top flight status next season.
The scoring leaderboard adjusted once again, with Blair Sturrock’s brace making him all alone at the helm once again.
It was a busy weekend for shutouts, and the Golden Gloves leaderboard had some adjustments as well:
It was a quality weekend, and the community was thankful to get some games in, and now take a rest for three weeks…. and hopefully get back at it mid January. We will take this time to spend with families and friends, and hope to see things calm done COVID wise.
Two matches that won’t now be taking place are the FVSL v VISL All-Star games that were scheduled for Cloverdale on January 8th. The two leagues have decided against the travel due to an abundance of caution.
Well, it is unfortunate, but is the best thing to do. In consult with the #FVSL, we here at #VISL have made the decision to postpone the 2 games on Jan 8/2022 at Cloverdale Turf. They will safe guard the trophies for us …. 🙁 pic.twitter.com/dzZGZLSAEq
