Vancouver Whitecaps v Columbus Crew – The Story In Pictures

With so many actors in attendance at BC Place on Saturday afternoon following the first Whitecaps Legends and Stars charity football match, it was perhaps written in some different stars that Vancouver Whitecaps and Columbus Crew would play out a match worthy of a screenplay.

Although if someone had come up with a film on the how the actual events played out, I’m pretty sure that it would have been dismissed as being too far fetched.

For all the build up of people saying this was a match that was more than just Tony Tchani versus Kekuta Manneh, the two stars, who had traded places and teams in March, faced their former sides for the first time, with both having pivotal roles to play in the end result.

After Ola Kamara cancelled out Fredy Montero’s first half opener within minutes, it looked like Manneh had won the match for Crew SC with a 25 yard thunderbolt to put Columbus ahead. But Tchani had other ideas, poking home a 92nd minute equaliser and salvage a point for the Western Conference leading Whitecaps.

The drama!

AFTN photographer Tom Ewasiuk was there to capture all the action before, during and after the game. Here’s his “Story In Pictures”, with a full Flickr slideshow at the end.

Your Vancouver Whitecaps starting XI

David Ousted was called into action early and it was to be a busy afternoon for the Dane

Hands up if you’re the birthday boy

The BC Place roof truly is a thing of wonder

In the 15th minute a nice interchange between Cristian Techera and Yordy Reyna slips Fredy Montero in on goal

And the Colombian makes no mistake to grab his 12th goal of the season

That should set the ‘Caps up nicely for the afternoon ahead. Oh….

Four minutes later and Ola Kamara buries his 16th of the year, losing his marker to finish of a Kekuta Manneh cross

Respect to the travelling Columbus fans

And to the 2017 North West Championship winning Vancouver Canadians

Yordy Reyna’s birthday wasn’t going great as he crashed a shot off the right post at the start of the second half following a lovely turn in the box

And the ‘Caps were punished for that in the 63rd minute as Kekuta Manneh powered in on goal

Unleashing a 25 yard screamer past David Ousted

This just looks so wrong

Thankfully for the ‘Caps Kekuta was soon replaced

Yordy Reyna’s afternoon was getting worse as he crashed a header off the right post

But there was still time for the ‘Caps and Fredy Montero sent a beautiful chip to the back post

Right to Tony Tchani, who fired home a 92nd minute equaliser

As much as he wanted to, he couldn’t celebrate against his old team

But that didn’t stop his new teammates. 2-2. The ‘Caps stay top of the West and move to unbeaten in six.
