Vancouver Whitecaps v Philadelphia Union – The Story In Pictures
We’ve been waiting for the Whitecaps to get into a scoring groove and give someone a hammering. Three goals against Philadelphia wasn’t quite that, but it was close. It was a dominant performance that was three goals going on five, six or more.
David Ousted came up with the game changing moment with a fantastic point blank save in the 26th minute that gave Vancouver the kick up the ass they needed. Goals from Pedro Morales and Octavio Rivero sent them on their way by half time. They could have added a few more in the second half but had to settle for just Darren Mattocks late strike.
Still, 3-0 and back on top of the standings isn’t a bad way to finish the weekend.
AFTN photographer Tom Ewasiuk was there to capture all the action before, during and after the game and here’s his “Story In Pictures”, with a full Flickr slideshow at the end.

Vancouver Whitecaps starting XI
Philadelphia Union starting XI – poor souls
It was pretty quiet until David Ousted’s 26th minute point blank save from Andrew Wenger sparked the Whitecaps to life
Vancouver responded immediately with a chance for Octavio Rivero
Then Kekuta Manneh had a try
Rivero had another try but MLS debutant Brian Sylvestre was standing tall
But Pedro Morales beat the offside trap and hit a sublime bending finish past Sylvestre to make it 1-0 ‘Caps
And he loves grabbing his second goal of the season
Then a minute before half time Rivero muscles his way past Ethan White
Then slots home with ease to make it 2-0
South American joy!
The Whitecaps keep it up at the start of the second half and Kekuta Manneh nearly makes it 3-0 just minutes in
Sylvestre did well but it looked like the Philly keeper curse had struck again at one point
It already looked like game over for the Union but Richie Marquez’s 78th minute red card for a tackle on Cristian Techera sealed their fate
Then after missing an earlier chance, Darren Mattocks makes it 3-0 in the 81st minute
Jamaican joy!
And the fans go home delighted
Pa Modou Kah giving children watching on TV nightmares!
Safe to say, Carl Robinson was happy with the afternoon’s work
