Vancouver Whitecaps v Real Salt Lake – The Story In Pictures
It wasn’t pretty but it got the job done. We’ve all been there and it was just what the Whitecaps needed at this moment in time – a comfortable two goal victory and keeping a clean sheet in the process.
No late drama, no questionable tackles that might lead to DisCo fever, just a ground out win against a team above them in the table.
There was an element of good fortune in the win with the opening own goal, but Cristian Techera’s strike was at least a thing of wonder in a game more full of wondering when the final whistle would come.
Real Salt Lake were understrength, only coming with a squad of 16 players and a lot of injuries. They still tested the ‘Caps defence towards the end. That was slightly worrying, but the fact that they bent and didn’t break more than negated that. That clean sheet, and Kendall Waston’s performances in the last two matches, will do the Whitecaps defence the world of good.
AFTN photographer Tom Ewasiuk was there to capture all the action before, during and after the game and here’s his “Story In Pictures”, with a full Flickr slideshow at the end.

Vancouver Whitecaps starting XI – Kudo’s not so sure about that though
Thou shall not pass
Not much to write home about until the 34th minute when Matias Laba sends a cross into the box
Which hits off two RSL defenders and ends up in the back of the net for the opener
Three minutes later the ball comes to Cristian Techera 30 yards out
And the Uruguayan fires a laser into the RSL net
Two in two now for the previous drought-ridden Bug
Not sure what’s going on here but it doesn’t look like much fun
