Report and Reaction: Rampant Whitecaps get job done early against Sporting KC to stay top of MLS
A three-goal first half blitz saw Vancouver Whitecaps continue their strong start to the season with a 3-0 victory over Sporting Kansas City at BC Place on Friday evening.
It was another dominant performance from Vancouver from start to finish with Emmanuel Sabbi, Bruno Caicedo, and Thomas Müller grabbing the goals that had the ‘Caps coasting by the half hour mark.
The game looked like it could get out of hand quickly for the visitors, but some resolute defending and some big stops from goalkeeper John Pulskamp kept it at three, despite constant ‘Caps pressure for more.
Another impressive win for the ‘Caps, who outshot their opponents 25 to 3, that keeps them at the top of both the MLS Western Conference and the Supporters Shield standings with one more home game left in their stand at BC Place before a grueling spell on the road.
Jesper Sorensen made two changes to his starting line-up from the team that saw off NYCFC last weekend, both came on the wing with Sabbi coming in for Jeevan Badwal on the right and Caicedo getting his first MLS start for Cheikh Sabaly on the left. Both had big roles to play in the Whitecaps demolition of the visitors.
Vancouver laid siege to the KC goal from the start, with Sabbi heading an Edier Ocampo cross wide just two minutes in.
Kansas City were struggling to keep hold of the ball and the ‘Caps pressure turned into the first goal of the evening in the 13th minute.
Brian White was played in by Müller and chipped the onrushing Pulskamp. The ball came to Matias Laborda, who was tackled in the box as he tried to get a shot off, and it broke to Sabbi, who made no mistake in firing home the opener.

Sabbi was almost in again four minutes later and was showing signs of the star player we saw last season.
The ‘Caps weren’t to be denied for long, however, and this time it was Caicedo who got his first MLS goal.
KC tried to play the ball out from the back and were put under pressure, with defender Cielo Tschantret passing the ball straight to Caicedo on the edge of the box. The Ecuadorian took a few touches before curling a beautiful shot low in the far corner to double Vancouver’s lead.
BRUNOOOOO! 🇪🇨

Five minutes later, it was three and you wondered how out of hand the scoreline could get.
Tristan Blackmon played a long ball forward to Sabbi, who chased it down and superbly kept it in with a slide. Picking himself up he delivered a pinpoint cross onto the head of Müller who flew through the air to powerfully direct it past Pulskamp.

The ‘Caps kept pressing to end the half with first Sabbi and then Sebastian Berhalter denied by the crossbar.
The second half started off in the same vein and Dejan Joveljic nearly headed a Berhalter free kick into his own net, but Pulskamp came up with a sprawling save to turn it away.
The KC defence came up with some big blocks to keep the ‘Caps at bay and enjoyed a few forays forward themselves, without testing the Vancouver backline too much and depending on what stats site you go by, either had no shots on target or just the one.
Ocampo drilled a low shot past the far post in the 75th minute as Vancouver pushed for that elusive fourth before Pulskamp again denied the ‘Caps to keep out a fierce Rayan Elloumi strike.
Vancouver had to settle for just the three-goal victory in the end and when your only gripe after a game is that it could and should have been more, that’s not a bad issue to have. Both Caicedo and Sabbi looked very good tonight and you have to hope that the latter going off injured late in the game is just a slight knock and nothing more serious.
Colorado Rapids are next up for the ‘Caps in eight days time. It’ll be the last home game at BC Place until August 1st, with five games against Western Conference rivals coming up in May before the World Cup break. When the fixtures came out you were looking for some strong home form to set the team up perfectly for the rest of the season to come. They’ve delivered so far. Now they need to round it out in style.

VANCOUVER WHITECAPS
JESPER SORENSEN
On tonight’s performance:
“In general, I think that we played with good force and good intensity, especially against the ball. I think we were very good. I think Andrés [Cubas] was really good in winning the ball back in the re-pressure and I think him and Sebastian [Berhalter] in the centre were very good in the re-pressure. I think that we had some good openings in the first half, and we scored some good goals, and had also big opportunities. I think in the rhythm and flow of the play, we should be able to get better. In the first half, I think we played well but I also think we made some rush decisions and mistakes. In the second half, I think it was a little bit back and forth. And they obviously also changed a little bit and got a little bit of momentum, and we also changed some [players] on the way and it broke the rhythm a little bit. But in general, I think we created a lot of chances, and I was quite happy with that. And obviously converting three goals was also great. So overall, I was quite satisfied with the performance.”
On Bruno Caicedo’s performance and first goal:
“I think Bruno [Caicedo] had a good game in general. It was about him getting in and finding the rhythm with his teammates. And, from a start, it’s a little bit different than when you get in the last 25 minutes and maybe you are chasing a lot. Now, it’s more about how do we get into the game and get connected to the others, both offensive and defensively. In general, I think he did okay, and it was a little bit special with the goal, of course. And we also saw that he can really be a threat going one-on-one. And I think for him, it was a very good first [starting] game and obviously we’re looking forward to a lot more from him, and he’s very promising. The start he’s had, we couldn’t have asked for more.”
WINGER BRUNO CAICEDO [THROUGH INTERPRETER] On scoring his first goal:
“I’m really happy for scoring my first goal. That goal is for all the fans who were chanting my name in the stands today…I just want to say thanks and I will continue to give my best for the club.”
On his confidence:
“The confidence comes from myself. I made a promise to myself before coming here to do my best, to give my all, and I’m really grateful to be here. I give a lot of thanks to God and my family for everything they’ve done for me, and now I just want to keep building on it and making sure I’m giving my best to the club.”
MIDFIELDER ANDRÉS CUBAS
On the team not conceding a goal while he’s been on the field this season:
[in English] “It’s a good thing, it makes me happy, but the goal is not for me, it’s for the team. Everyone are doing well defensively, so that is important. The main thing is for the team to keep working.”On the start to the season:
[through interpreter] “I think we’re doing a great job, the objective is to always keep working and always be top of the table. We’ve shown that in the first weeks… We know that we have some tough games coming up and a tough schedule, but we’re just making the most of these home games and performing in front of our crowd, and we want to keep performing at the level we’re at.”SPORTING KANSAS CITY
HEAD COACH RAPHAEL WICKY
Thoughts on the game:
“Of course the first half didn’t go the way I wanted. But overall, I have to say. I can take positives from this performance. I told this to the players. They don’t see this right now, but as a coach, I can do something with this performance. On Tuesday, I couldn’t do anything with that performance. And in certain other games, we had performances that were way worse than tonight. We knew this is a tough place to play. We knew they’re a top team of the league. They are one of the best teams I’ve played so far. We knew it was going to be tough. I think even in the first half, there were spells where we were there, but then in those important moments we obviously give these goals away and we hurt ourselves. I saw a very young team, some guys with their first start in MLS and first minutes in MLS. I saw the team who wanted to apply what we wanted to do. And then, obviously, it’s tough for them that in 30 minutes you concede three goals. That’s always very tough mentally. But I didn’t see a team giving up. I saw a team who kept working, who wanted and the message at halftime was, let’s try to win the second half. I think the team went out there and fought against again a very, very good team. And I thought we looked good. We had good possession. We had an idea. We had some chances. So that’s how I see this game. Obviously no one likes to lose. I’m the first one and the players as well. But again, I try to look at it a little bit different. And with this performance, I told the team I can build.”
On changing tactics:
“I think today it’s not going to be, for example, pressed all the way all the time all high and open us up. Obviously, they’re good. That’s why we’re also a bit deeper. In possession, actually, I want our team to be brave in the right moments because we played a lot long against San Jose, for example, and we then don’t win the balls. We don’t win the second balls. But I think you have to find the right balance and that’s what I want. I don’t want to be the extreme and always play. But I think we have to make the right choices. When do we play and when do we try to chip a ball or play in behind? Because just putting the ball long, I don’t think that is going to help us. I think we need to find the right balance and we’re going to work on that. That’s what I believe in.”
On the team’s progress:
“Obviously, I’m not happy. I’m not happy with how the season is going. Of course not. But it’s a new team. It’s a very young team. It’s a team who will take a while to come together. That’s not excuses, that’s just facts. We’ve had a lot of injuries. We’ve had players out and they have to come back. You have to reintegrate them. We’ve had new players to integrate. We’re a team who has to find themselves and grow together. I believe 100% that we will get there where we want and we will go to the right direction. Today, like I said, there were moments of this game where I saw a team who tries to play, who has character, who has personality, and not just kicking the ball long and hoping for the best. Now there is still obviously a lot of things which we have to do better because we make mistakes in the wrong moments and we hurt us. But I’d rather have a team showing up and playing with character and personality than being scared. That’s where we have to work on.”
On the young players:
“When I was hired, this was part of the hire as well. This is a club who wants to build young players, academy players, and help them develop and help them grow into the first team. That’s a part I like, but I don’t think right now we’re in the best place because I always believe that when you put in one or two young players, they should be surrounded by something which works. And right now, it is not the case because of various reasons, so it’s not easy for them to be on the field because obviously the team is not complete yet. Then we had all these injuries and we always have to change and then you have to put young players in. That is not always easy. But on the other hand. since preseason, this is an opportunity for all these young kids to grow. We had a lot of young players in preseason. We have a lot of young players in this team right now. A lot of them are getting minutes. They have to take this opportunity and grow and gain experience. But normally you would like not having five or six together on the field, because it’s difficult. You would have maybe two together and surrounded by something and that would be the ideal. Right now it’s not, so it’s an opportunity for them to grow and some show up really well.”
