Episode 466 – The AFTN Soccer Show (Home Is Wherever I’m With You – LAFC v Vancouver, Whitecaps come home, Canada reach Gold Cup semis, MLS and CPL round-up)

The latest AFTN Soccer Show is out for another packed show of Vancouver Whitecaps, MLS, Canadian Premier League, and Canadian national team chat.

What a fantastic feast of football, and indeed sport, was served up this weekend. And most of it gives us a lot of positives to chat about this week.

We start off in MLS with the Whitecaps. They may have given up a two goal lead, but there were a lot of positives to be taken and foundations laid from their draw at LAFC. We look back at the highs, the lows, and the main talking points coming out of the match, hear from head coaches Marc Dos Santos and Bob Bradley, and round up the weekend’s action in MLS.

The Whitecaps have now headed back to Vancouver for the first time since March, and while they won’t be playing home games here until August 21st, they can at least train and be in their own surroundings. We look at their return, the boost it’s given the team, and hear the thoughts of MDS, Russell Teibert, and Brian White on finally getting back to Canada.

Moving onto the international stage, the 2021 Gold Cup is at the semi-final stage and Canada are there to battle it out for a place in the final after their win over Costa Rica. We look back at that excellent quarter-final performance, hear from head coach John Herdman, and he and Max Crepeau share some thoughts about a wide open tournament.

Heading back home to the Canadian Premier League, we look at where things stand for each team after the kickoff tournament event in Winnipeg wrapped up and bring you audio from each side featuring Valour FC’s Rob Gale and Jonathan Sirois, Pacific FC’s James Merriman, Cavalry FC’s Tommy Wheeldon Jr, FC Edmonton’s Alan Koch, Forge FC’s Bobby Smyrniotis, York United’s Jim Brennan, HFX Wanderers Mesut Mert and Alessandro Riggi, and Atletico Ottawa’s Malcolm Shaw.

Here’s the rundown for the main segments from the episode:
